Our Long Distance relationship Story

Ram ram!

We are Maeve & Kart, the writers of Spoonful of Chini.

While multicultural relationships that go long distances are rare, we know there are plenty out there sharing similar stories to us.

So here is a snippet of our own story for you all looking for some encouragement to pursue your own long distance relationship or multicultural relationship.

A little bit about us

How we met from two different countries

As we all know, after the pandemic, many of us resorted to online communication. As for the two of us, we downloaded a penpal app to reach out to the other side of the world. To be honest, Maeve never thought to write to India, and Kart had absolutely no interest in speaking to any Americans, due to all the stereotypes of course. But he gave it a chance. He found Maeve’s profile and despite his apprehensions, he wrote her a letter.

What followed was basically the longest chain of letters in history. Our conversations covered everything from psychology to childhood memories, to music. Before we knew it, our messages were getting longer and longer, and we were practically writing novels to each other.

Eventually, we moved to texting and calling every day—for two years! I (Maeve) might have been in America, but my mind was constantly in India. I could hear the honking of the traffic, the laughter of his family in the background, the Hindi conversations floating through the house—and yes, even the loud, jingle-playing trash truck that rolls through Indian streets.

After 2 years of our online relationship, we decided enough was enough. Why were we delaying something we’ve been hoping for since the beginning? So we started taking real steps and planned our trip to Bali.

How we met for real after 2 years of long distance

After lots of research about visas and the most affordable options, Bali became the perfect meeting spot for us. Kart hopped on his very first flight from Delhi and arrived in Bali a whole day before me.

We met at the airport, like every long distance couple would envision for themselves, and it was nothing short of magical. It was one of those moments that felt so surreal—seeing each other for the first time after two years of video calls and text messages. I couldn’t believe it was finally happening!

We spend two weeks in the most beautiful place on earth. We zipped around on a scooter through the mountains, swam in the ocean at sunrise, and stayed in some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. We moved from one gorgeous spot to another, trying to soak up everything Bali had to offer. And it was stunning and absolutely unforgettable.

You’d think meeting someone in person after two years might be awkward, right? But for us, it wasn’t at all. It felt so natural, like we had been together all along. We already knew each other on such a deep level that everything just clicked. It was like we were finally where we were meant to be, just being ourselves together.

Of course, our unusual story caught people’s attention throughout our trip. We got a lot of curious looks and questions, like, “How did two people from completely different countries end up together?” It’s a question we’ll probably be answering for the rest of our lives!

After exploring the shores, spending time with monkeys, and driving through all the rice paddies and mountainous regions of Bali—we made our way back to India to meet his family.

Traveling to India and where we are now

The trip to India was just as perfect as Bali. No culture shocks or feeling too out of place. It all went smoothly, because after all, we’ve been learning about each other’s cultures for two years. I (Maeve) met the entire family and lived with them for the rest of the Fall until I had to return back home for Christmas. It was only for a short while before I returned to India again in February to stay.

Now we live together in Jaipur India, as a married multicultural couple. You can check out our adventures of living together in India here.
